The same thing happens if they produce the object that a parent has asked for. With experience and reinforcement, children learn the bidirectionality of relationships between spoken words, objects, and written words. As they get older, children only need to be taught a relationship in one direction, such as, “This cold, yummy stuff is ice cream,” and they will derive a second relationship, that the spoken word “ice cream” refers to the cold, yummy stuff, without direct training. We can say that the child has learned a relation of coordination, or sameness, between the spoken word and the object, such that they stand for the same thing.

Values are what create motivation for change in ACT. They can serve as augmentals that provide the forward momentum. 33 ACT for Adolescents Committed Actions Committed actions are the concrete steps, often uncomfortable ones, that clients begin to take in ACT in the service of living life according to their values. These actions, or behaviors, are almost sure to bring up a mental replay of unwanted private experiences that the clients have been trying to avoid.

It also provides an opportunity to share the ACT perspective that their teen isn’t “broken” and in need of “strategies” to “fix” her, which gently introduces the concept of acceptance to parents. We find that the idea of ACT, although initially easy for parents to embrace, usually turns out not to be quite what they expect from a therapist, so it is better for parents to hear an initial explanation from the therapist rather than put the adolescent in the position of trying to explain why she spent a session with a clear plastic sheet in front of her face, talking about DOTS, or doing other seemingly nonsensical activities in which ACT therapists are likely to engage them.
