They are the only possible solutions in a class of problems where power consumption or high sampling frequency is a very stringent requirement. All SW implementations and hybrid systems with FPGA's are much cheaper than any other method, for small and medium scale productions, except for very high speed (from g. 4 and g. 5). In particular, hybrid systems and SoC's are very suited to embedded systems, as they can o er the highest performance at the lowest price, provided that design e ort is made su cient low, as is the case with HW/SW codesign.

In order to implement the self-repair of the organism, we decided to use spare cells to the right of the original organism (Figure 5). 4 below). The state KILL = 1 identifies the faulty cell, and the entire column to which the faulty cell belongs is considered faulty and is deactivated (column X = 2 in Figure 5). All the functions (X coordinate and gene) of the cells to the right of the column X = 1 are shifted by one column to the right. Obviously, this process requires as many spare columns to the right of the array as there are faulty cells or columns to repair (two spare columns, tolerating two successive faulty cells, in the example of Figure 5).

At present no commercial analog FPGA exists, although some prototype is currently under development. FPGA's are as exible as ASIC's during the design phase, but they can change their functions at any time during lifetime or operation by means of an appropriate programming sequence stored into their internal memory (either RAM or PROM). FPGA's can be designed by means of the same tools and languages used to design ASIC's, but their programmability reduces signi cantly NRE (see sect. 5) manufacturing costs and delays, at the expense of higher RE costs, therefore they are preferred for small and medium quantities (see g.
