He has made his personal choice between Magyar and Teutonic languages and cultures, noting in a rather high-minded tone that ‘For my own part, all my life, in every sphere, always and in every way, I shall have one objective: the good of Hungary and the Hungarian nation. I think I have already given some proof of this intention in the minor ways which have so far been possible to me’. He fears, however, that his own immediate family was all too ready to fall back into German. It seems that Bartók’s greatest concern was that he might be regarded as a hypocrite and a fraud because of his family’s linguistic laxity.
On this occasion he suffered from pneumonia of the right lung and was coughing up blood as a result of haemorrhages, though the prognosis of his doctor, Gábor Pávai Vajna, as reported on 23 September 1890, was positive. 60 Among Bartók’s fellow students at the Academy was a young woman called Felicitás (known affectionately as Felicie) Fábián, to whom he developed an amorous attachment. Felicie can be seen in a photograph with the other members of Thomán’s class, taken on 6 June 1901. Her name is first mentioned in Bartók’s letters to his mother on 16 January 1900, and she appears regularly in their correspondence up to February 1903.

According to Ármin Vámbéry (author of the first English-language history of Hungary, a volume published in 1886), in the aftermath of 1848–9: wholesale massacres were committed throughout the country, until at last the conscience of Europe rose up against these cruel butcheries, and the court itself removed the sanguinary baron [the Austrian General Julius Jacob von Haynau] from the scene of his inhuman exploits.
