The communication and critical evaluation of ideas necessary for enlightenment could not be achieved by people who lacked the ability to read, write, and think critically. But in eighteenth-century Europe (not to mention elsewhere), most people did lack the ability to read, write, and think critically. ’’1 Despite their widely diVerent starting points and methodological commitments, Enlightenment philosophers were united in their conviction that education was of fundamental importance in human life.
