The analyst’s job can sometimes be just to sit there and be a “bad” analyst for the patient. Being “a bad analyst” was what Winnicott thought Wilhelm Fliess had been for Freud. (It seems to me unfortunate that Winnicott, Glover, and other analysts understood Freud’s friendship with Fliess on the model of the analytic encounter). Winnicott even thought that perhaps Freud did not “ever read” Fliess’s letters. That cannot have been literally true, but I took Winnicott to be saying something important about the inevitable self-involvement of all creative activity.
I refer to his notion that analysts write papers and books as a way of completing their own personal analy- WINNICOTT : THE TRANSITIONAL THINKER 19 sis. I have, unsurprisingly, often pondered what there could have been about my own analysis that has made it necessary for me to carry out such an excess of self-healing investigations and writings. I also wonder what my analyst thinks about all of this—whether or not he has read Winnicott. What could this need be about? In trying to answer this question, I am brought to two unexpected, but mind-opening, considerations.
